One of Australia’s greatest cities to live, work and relax, Brisbane is a strong incubator and attractor for talent across several industry sectors.

Already home to the brightest minds and world-class innovation, Brisbane’s talent base is being supercharged by Australia’s highest levels of migration growth. With the population predicted to grow by 43% by 2041, Brisbane is a city on an unstoppable upward trajectory, and a place of opportunity for all.

Education and research in Brisbane

Brisbane’s local universities are highly awarded, with The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Griffith University all having strong international reputations.

Brisbane has a strong tertiary-educated population, with a higher percentage of residents attending university than the Australian average. Students from more than 100 countries choose to study in Brisbane, with the city having the largest Japanese student market in Australia. Brisbane was also named one of the top 30 best student cities in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2023.

Brisbane is also home to more than 100 health and biotech facilities, and a globally competitive life sciences sector that’s linked by a knowledge corridor running five kilometres from the north to the south, through the inner city. This knowledge corridor is made up of world-class hospitals, research institutes and university precincts. This includes the Translational Research Institute (TRI), an Australian-first state-of-the-art facility for biopharmaceuticals and treatments to be discovered, produced, clinically tested, and manufactured in one location.

TRI – along with the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Ecosciences Precinct (ESP), The University of Queensland, Patheon by Thermo Fisher Scientific, and the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence (PACE) – are anchor institutes of the Boggo Road Innovation Precinct, a bioeconomy precinct of 1,000 scientists working to deliver solutions for some of Australia’s biggest health and environmental challenges.

The QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, one of Australia’s most successful medical research institutes, is also based in Brisbane, whilst research centres aligned with The Prince Charles Hospital are tackling chronic diseases impacting 90% of the population.

It’s no surprise, then, that Brisbane has been named one of the Top 50 most innovative cities globally by innovation agency 2thinknow.

With an outstanding talent base, and 245,000 jobs predicted by 2031, Brisbane’s future is bright.
