Why Brisbane?

Brisbane continues to shine on the world stage as a leader in sustainability, achieving significant milestones in recent years. In 2023, Brisbane became the first Australian city to be awarded a gold certification in the United Nations Habitat’s Sustainable Development Goals Cities program.

Each year, Brisbane participates in the Global Destination Sustainability Index - a respected benchmarking and improvement program that measures and advances the regenerative progress of 81 destinations worldwide. In 2025, Brisbane has surged into the world’s Top 20 most sustainable destinations, climbing 17 places to a ranking of 16, and improving its sustainability score by 8%.

In 2024, Brisbane achieved Bronze Benchmarking status by EarthCheck, one of the world's leading global environmental management and advisory groups for the travel and tourism industry. Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) and Brisbane City Council, supported by grant funding from the State Government, partnered to attain global accreditation for the city, with Brisbane exceeding best practice benchmarks across key categories including social, environmental and economic sustainability.

In 2025, Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), Brisbane's official convention bureau, driver of major events and Regional Tourism Organisation, achieved Silver Certification by EarthCheck. The milestone recognises BEDA's core role in driving sustainable growth across events, tourism, and the wider visitor economy.
